Remembering WSU Regent Sam Hunt

Dear colleagues,

We were profoundly saddened to learn over the weekend of the passing of Washington State University Regent Sam Hunt. Regent Hunt spent a lifetime strengthening the very systems that make Washington State University’s land‑grant mission possible, from championing public education in Olympia alongside our students to shaping the policies and investments that sustain our work. As a Coug then appointed regent in December of 2024, he brought a depth of experience, integrity, and understanding of how to position WSU to serve every corner of our state.

We want to extend our condolences to his children Hillary and Nathan, family, friends, and fellow Cougs who will miss his decisiveness, sense of humor and kind way of being. His impact will be lasting to the students and communities who count on us.

In honor of Regent Hunt’s incredible legacy, we have established the Sam Hunt Memorial Scholarship Fund to further sustain his influence and contribution to Washington State University’s future.

Sincerely,

BETSY CANTWELL
President, Washington State University
