Presidential Update — Week of July 14, 2025

Dear Colleagues,

In light of diminished support from the state and federal government, universities across the country are called to make difficult decisions in preparation for an uncertain future. At WSU, we are meeting this moment with purpose. By investing in the areas that most directly support the workforce outcomes of our academic programs and the community impacts of the research and programs we deliver, we are looking to position our institution — and Washington communities — for long-term success.

This Week

  • Budget implementation plans under review
This week, WSU’s leadership team met to review the submitted budget implementation plans for FY26 to ensure alignment with institutional priorities. While the majority of the submitted plans have been approved, a formal communication will go to unit leads and finance officers with final budget packages and guidance at the conclusion of our review. As plans are approved, campuses, colleges, and units must consult with their senior HR consultant or the Provost’s Office to ensure compliance with university policy. Additional information on the final FY26 budget will be shared with the university community and on our New Chapter website as it becomes available.

We are not simply reacting to constraints. We are choosing to invest in what matters most. While higher education offers many possibilities, it is up to us to invest in the opportunities that will shape a stronger and more resilient future.

Looking ahead, we will be taking two weeks off from these weekly updates to reset and prepare for the start of what promises to be a terrific academic year.

Warm regards,

Elizabeth R. Cantwell
President, Washington State University
