Presidential Update — Week of July 7, 2025

Dear Colleagues,

Today marks my 100th day as president of Washington State University — a meaningful milestone and just the beginning of our shared journey ahead. Over the past three months, I’ve had the opportunity to visit each of our campuses, learn more about WSU’s rich history, and engage with leaders and partners across the state. These conversations have deepened my understanding of the university’s unique strengths and will help determine the path we take to ensure continued success moving forward.

Last Week

  • Texas State joins the Pac‑12 Conference
On June 30, Texas State University was welcomed as a foundational member of the new Pac‑12 beginning in the 2026–27 season. With the addition of the Bobcats, the new conference will have the eight football-playing members necessary to meet NCAA requirements, and nine full members across all other conference sports. This addition is a significant step in strengthening the future of the Pac‑12 and WSU’s role within it.
  • Evaluating the impact of recent legislation
On July 4, the federal reconciliation bill (H.R.1) was signed into law, marking a turning point for universities across the country. The legislation caps some student loans, eliminates the Grad PLUS program, creates a new income-driven loan repayment plan, and uses graduate earnings to hold colleges accountable for their programming, beginning in July 2026. At WSU, we remain committed to access and affordability, and we are working with state and federal lawmakers to respond to the broader effects of this legislation.

This Week

  • Reminder: FY26 budget implementation plans due tomorrow
A reminder that department leaders and area finance officers must submit their budget implementation plans for review by EOD tomorrow. Units can expect a review of their submitted plans the week of July 14, with a focus on how these plans support the university’s priorities related to academic and student success, service and research, and sustainability and innovation.

As I reflect on these first 100 days, I have been inspired by the passion, dedication, and resiliency of the Cougar community. These early months have affirmed my belief in our university’s extraordinary potential, and, as we look ahead, I am committed to working alongside you to translate our shared goals into meaningful progress. With your help, we will build a future for WSU that is bold in ambition, grounded in our mission, and driven by excellence.

Warm regards,

Elizabeth R. Cantwell
President, Washington State University
