Presidential Update — Week of June 16, 2025

Dear Colleagues,

As we evaluate our budgets and monitor shifts at the state and federal government, the WSU leadership team is focused on building strong partnerships, evaluating new funding streams, streamlining operations, and identifying programmatic opportunities that will benefit students and communities across the state for years to come.

This Week

  • Advocating for continued support for Washington State University
In the discussions I’ve had with legislators, donors, and corporate partners over the last two weeks, I have appreciated the candor and shared desire to address the complex challenges facing our communities. These conversations are shaping our strategic direction and reinforcing the importance of WSU’s role in driving positive change across Washington. As of today, I’ve met with Governor Ferguson and the following lawmakers — and look forward to meeting more in short order:
    • From the Federal Delegation:
      • Representative Baumgartner
      • Senator Murray
    • From the State Legislature:
      • Representative Bergquist
      • Representative Paul
      • Representative Reeves
      • Senator Riccelli
      • Senator Robinson
      • Representative Schmidt
      • Senator Schoesler
  • Reminder: 30‑Day budget plans due on July 11
As units across the system continue to assess options for budget reductions, it is essential that all 30‑day budget plans are submitted by July 11. Timely submission will ensure we stay on track with our planning efforts and maintain momentum toward long-term financial sustainability.

Thank you, again, for your commitment to Washington State University’s mission, students, and one another. I appreciate your partnership in building a better future for the university moving forward.

Warm regards,

Elizabeth R. Cantwell
President, Washington State University
