Highlights of Contemporary Excellence
- WSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine has one of
the best equipped teaching hospitals in the world. The
College excels in research benefiting animal and human
health and enjoys one of the highest licensing exam pass
rates for veterinary students nationwide. In fiscal year
2006, CVM faculty conducted more than $16 million in
competitively funded research, placing it in the top tier
of all veterinary schools. Specialized research areas
include food- and water-borne diseases, neurobiology,
immunology and infectious diseases, and microbial
genomics and proteomics.
- Through the Institute for Biological Chemistry, the School of Molecular Biosciences, and other multi-disciplinary efforts, WSU is home to one of the best known and most productive contingents of plant biochemists and molecular bioscientists in the world. Due to their work, the University has led major advances in the fields of human health, food, and nutrition, including the development of new plant varieties and plant-based pharmaceuticals.
- More than 200 WSU and University of Idaho scientists collaborate through the Center for Reproductive Biology, the largest grouping of reproductive scientists in the country. The Center is home to many of the world’s premier scientists in chromosomal biology and functional genetics.
- The Washington State University Honors College is one of the oldest and most highly regarded public university honors programs in the country, attracting top students in all majors from throughout the United States and around the world.
- The Edward R. Murrow School of Communication, named for the famed and courageous WSU alumnus of 1930, is cited consistently among the top communication programs in the nation and includes nationally ranked programs in advertising, broadcast journalism, and public relations.
- More than 800 top scholars from Washington attend WSU through the Regents Scholars Program. Initiated in 2002, this program provides merit-based scholarship support for outstanding undergraduate students who compete with the best high school students in the state for approximately 200 awards per year.
- Washington State University’s Writing Across the Curriculum Program is ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the best in the country and serves as a national model for including the writing portfolio as a requirement for undergraduate graduation.
- WSU has been recognized nationally for its efforts to diversify its faculty, staff, and students. The Office of Equity and Diversity was featured in the September 2006 Chronicle of Higher Education and cited as one of the leading administrative models for achieving diversity in higher education.
